Ok so I decided to be "cheap" and buy this book over frommers or fodors 2010. I like that this book focuses on just one area of Costa Rica- Arenal/Monteverede. Being more concentrated, it gives more information on the area than Frommers or Frodors, as far as options, not details. I was considering a hotel that is not listed in "Costa Rica 2010" by frommers or fodors, but is in here.
This book is really good at offering options. It will give you websites to check out the places yourself as well. For example, if you are wanting to do a zipline, this book tells you which one is considered the most thrilling, but the details are brief. This book lists phone numbers for most tours. It lists prices and hours of operation for some, but not all. There are about 4 or so websites listed for ziplines, so you have to do the footwork to decide which you want (number of platforms, lengh of zipline, number of hours tour takes) I did not know that there are hot air ballon rides in the area. This book also offered a little more information than I was able to find online about Venado Cave tours.
Most places listed in this book have phone numbers and websites so you can get details from the place itself. This is nice, but when you buy a book it would be nicer to have a little more information at hand than looking up so much by yourself. Also, I was very frustrated when apparently this book lists some incorrect information. It makes me wonder that if I discovered something was wrong, how much more is wrong that I don't know? Here it is: Page 29 states that at Arenal Observatory Lodge "is a ridge-top property offering immaculate views over the lake and volcano (you are viewing the east side, not the side with the lava flows, however)." On page 28 ,directly across from this statement, is a map showing that first of all, the lake is on the WEST side, so how could you have views over it and see the EAST side of the volcano? Also, this map shows that the Lodge mentioned is on the SOUTH side of the volcano, more southWEST than anything. Page 27 says "in 2008 a collapse at the crater rim shifted the predominant lava flows to the eastern side."
Furthermore, I have checked with numerous websites that say the lava flow is on the west to southwestern side. I have even talked with people recently back from Arenal that say the flow is visible from the Lodge and hotels to the western side, and has been for a while. This book was published Nov 2009, so the information should be correct at the time it was printed, and this was not. If a traveler booked a hotel on the east side due to these remarks, they would be very disappointed.

I'd say this book has been a help, but I don't fully trust it and in the future I will stick to fodors or frommers, and spend the extra money. I think this is a good quick reference, giving you info on what is available better than you could find for yourself with web searches. As for actually picking from the options this book lists, do the grunt work yourself and check out websites before making a decision.
