5 out of 5 stars A guide to all 46 of the nation's natural areas and preserves   December 18, 2009
Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA)
Any planning a trip to Costa Rica will want the third updated edition of Costa Rica: National Parks and Preserves. It offers park descriptions, trail listings, maps, details on flora and fauna, and more and tells how to get off the beaten path with a guide to all 46 of the nation's natural areas and preserves - including many most foreign visitors miss.

4 out of 5 stars Great overview to help plan a nature-oriented trip   October 10, 2009
Leo N. Egashira (Seattle, WA USA)
I liked this book: It whetted my appetite to visit and appreciate Costa Rica's progressive conservation policies. The descriptions of the parks, their flora and fauna (written by a biologist), and access issues are detailed and useful. Scattered throughout the text are very interesting and informative sidebars that address unique features: Strangler Figs, Scarlet Macaws, Leatherback Turtles, etc. For folks planning a trip to Costa Rica, especially those who wish to sample as much of its natural and geographic diveristy as possible, this guidebook is invaluable.

I only offer two possible improvements: Topographic maps would have been helpful, especially for hiking and backpacking purposes, though I must admit, most of the parks are pretty small and perhaps topo details aren't as crucial. The other improvement would have been detailed descriptions of the longer backpacking trails that go through multiple parks.
