5 out of 5 stars The Petersons Share Real World Advice...   February 27, 2010

... and hands on experience in this lovely country. Both are what you would call, Costa Rician advocates- one being an attorney and the other a host of a Costa Rica radio show. You can feel the love they have for the country. More importantly, they share the details any traveler -MUST- have when visiting the country. They don't just stop there= the book expands well into the ins-and-outs of moving there full or part time, buying property, taxes, and way much more. I could seriously not think of a question unanswered. The best part- if I think of one I can easily contact either of the authors and get a quick answer.

More useful that Fodor's, more direct than Frommer's. A must have for anyone considering a trip to Costa Rica and should be required reading for anyone considering a longer term stay or partial residence.

When will you tackle the same type of guide for other countries?

5 out of 5 stars Great book   February 16, 2010

This is an extremely helpful, thorough book, and it covers pretty much every question you could possibly have about either vacationing in, or moving to, Costa Rica.

For vacationers, it goes over what to pack, what airlines to take, what to do about the drinking water, what the customs regulations are, etc. For people considering living there, it goes into even more detail, from taxes to real estate to how the utilities work. It's ridiculously thorough.

If you're interested in either visiting or living in Costa Rica, this book covers pretty much every question you could possibly have. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Useful Resource   May 28, 2010

I'm not normally one for buying guide books for holiday/business destinations, however having never been to Costa Rica I thought it may be wise to do so.

This book is both clear and concise (although it is still 156 pages) and gave me more than enough detail and information about a country that I knew very little about. There were also many questions that I had about the country that were answered in the contents of this book.

I also found the Appendix section at the back of the book particularly useful, with information about Embassies and Hospitals.

Save your money!

I have been living in Costa Rica for 11 years and feel qualified to write about which books are good and which ones are not.
At 156 pages this book is NOT long enough and therefore does not nearly cover the subject in enough depth. To make matters worse the type is very large in order to make the book appear longer to compensate for the lack of subject matter. If the type was 10 or 12 font size, the book would only be about 80 pages long!!!
At best it is a SUPERFICIAL treatment of the subject. This book should have been about 200 pages longer. I found it extremely disappointing and a WASTE of money at almost $20. From the sound and scope of this guidebook I just don't get the impression that the author has much experience as a Costa Rica expert, either. The whole book reminds me of one chapter on resources from a much longer guidebook.
I prefer the following time-tested guidebooks which really go into detail and are therefore 1000 times more helpful: John Howells' "Choose Costa Rica (350 pages)," Christopher Howard's "New Golden Door to Retirement and Living in Costa Rica (almost 600 pages)," Erin Van Reehen's "Living Abroad in Costa Rica (425 pages)" or the Tico Times' annual "Exploring Costa Rica (400 pages)." These are the best books on the subject and should be "required reading" and the main resource for anyone thinking of living, retiring or going into business in Costa Rica. A couple of these guides are even LESS expensive than Mr. Petersen's guidebook. In short, I WOULDN'T recommend his book to anyone.
